Genyukan Dojo Shotokan Karate Ranking System

Criteria for examination

Pinkhasov Roman Sensei with Sawada Sensei, 7th Dan JKAThe information below will help you understand the idea behind rank advancement.

Rank is recognition of skill level within the context of our dojo and style. It indicates the progress of the student with regard to both the physical and the mental aspects of the martial art grading in. Because each student has a different potential, it is important not to compare your progress with that of another. Ranks should only be used as a means by which to measure your own skill level.

Gradings for rank advancement are conducted two or three times. Each grading covers the basic elements of the art. Each rank has specific requirements for each element.

During each grading, consideration is given for aspects other than one's technical level, such as age, length of time practicin, attitude toward practice, attitude toward others, concern for responsibilities, and number of Special Trainings attended.

All Genyukan students begin as unranked, and may advance through the different levels of colored belts.

The ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the characters of its participants.
